This activity encourages children to recognise common 2D shapes and their names.
Brainstorm the 2D shapes children already know by writing their names and drawing a picture. You could use this to create a classroom poster. Encourage children to identify where they have seen these shapes in their daily lives.
If you have 2D shape blocks in your room you can use these, otherwise you could print some out using the Shapes tool in Microsoft Word onto coloured card. Children use these shapes to create a landscape (or any other picture) by tracing around these shapes. They then label each of the different shapes they have used. Encourage children to use a variety of shapes or make it a rule that they must use each shape given at least once.
Select children to share the pictures they have created. Cover up the name of a shape and point to it, asking the rest of the class to recall its name.
