This activity encourage children to recognise 2D shapes in their daily lives.
Brainstorm a list of 2D shapes. Make this into a poster or write it on the whiteboard. Ask children to think about where they might find this shape at home or in the community. E.g. A stop sign is in the shape of a hexagon.
Children are to use the classroom environment to locate objects that are in the shape of common 2D shapes. They record this in their maths books or can create a poster. They might draw a picture of the door and beside it write 'The door is a rectangle'. They repeat this for other shapes they can find.
For the younger grades you may want to assign one shape to each child. They repeat the same activity for the shape they are given on a piece of paper and at the end the teacher can collect all work and create a class book of 2D shapes.
Select students to share their work. Cover up the names of shapes and point to the object drawn, asking children to put their hand up to name the shape.
