Photographs of 2D Shapes

This is a fun, simple activity that encourages children to recognise 2D shapes in their school ground. Children should already have some knowledge of common 2D shapes. Otherwise you may want to brainstorm these before proceeding with the activity.

Introduction

Review common 2D shapes. Ask children to trace these in the air and on a partner's back. Explain that children are going to use a certain amount of space in the playground. Make the boundaries you have set clear.

Activity

Children rove the playground to write a list of the objects they can find that are common 2D shapes. They draw or write the name of the object and beside it write its name.
As children are doing this, use a camera to take photos of the shapes children find.

Print these photos out to create a display of real-life 2D shapes.
