Use an enlarged page of the Melways discuss common features of maps and the term 'bird's eye view'. Discuss grid references and why they are used on maps. Ask children to locate specific grid references on the enlarged map.
Using a Melway map of your local area, students locate two places important in their community and write down their grid reference.
One of these places will be the ‘secret’ destination. Students then write directions to travel between the 2 places.
Students swap directions, give each other a starting point and try to follow each other’s directions to the secret location.
