Investigation Number Patterns Using a 1-100 Grid

Introduction

What is an odd number? What is an even number? Where do we see them? (eg. letter boxes, page numbers etc.)

In numbers more than one digit, do all numbers need to be odd for the number to be called an odd number? What are the base odd numbers? (1, 3, 5, 7, 9)
What are the base even numbers? (2, 4, 6, 8, 0)

Activity

Using a 1-100 chart. Colour odd numbers in pink and even numbers in blue. Circle each multiple of five.

Write three sentences about the patterns you have found.
Eg. When counting by threes it goes odd, even, odd, even…etc

Extension: Start at the number 14 and count by 5s. Does the same pattern form?

Conclusion

Select students to share some of the patterns they have found.
