Is a Straight Line the Shortest Distance Between Two Points?

Introduction

Investigate the idea of a line being the shortest distance between two points in the classroom. Use string, rulers, and a series of dots in various places. Is this true? What type of line is it if you don’t have the shortest distance? (curved line, a crooked line etc.)

Identify, in the classroom or walk around the school, different lines in our environment. Optional: Take a digital camera and photograph different objects during the school walk. For example, building structures, objects and inclinations.

Activity

Students design a robot or house using a combination of vertical, horizontal, perpendicular, curved and diagonal lines. They label each line according to its type (vertical, horizontal etc.)

Conclusion

Students share the designs of their robots/houses.
