Diagonal, Horizontal, Vertical, Curved, Perpendicular and Parallel Lines

This activity is a follow up from the lesson 'Is a straight line the shortest distance between two points?'

Introduction

Revise different lines with the class. Ask students to think of three objects in the classroom with straight lines (e.g. table, ruler) and curved lines (bin, basketball).

Introduce and draw parallel and perpendicular lines on the board. Discuss the fact that a perpendicular line is at a right angle to a straight line. Guide children to discover that parallel lines remain the same distance apart.

Activity

Using magazines, newspapers and other visual clippings, students cut out different pictures and objects that demonstrate the different types of lines your grade has covered. They label each picture with the type of line. The work can be completed in books or pictures can be stuck onto posters with each heading being a different type of line.
