Multiplication Think Boards

Introduction

What is multiplication? Why do we use it? Brainstorm and discuss. Demonstrate multiplication as repeated addition and share a story relating to the the problem. Invite children to share their own multiplication stories. Demonstrate how to solve these using repeated addition and pictures - then show how to write these as a multiplication number sentence, introducing the multiplication symbol.

Activity

Students create a think board by showing a multiplication problem as repeated addition, a picture and as a story.

Conclusion

Selected students share their think boards with the class.
