Introduction

What is Perimeter?
“The distance around a shape.” Brainstorm ideas and discuss when you might calculate perimeter in real life (measuring the perimeter of a garden bed to make a fence etc.)

Highlight perimeter of shapes drawn on the board by the teacher. Demonstrate how to calculate the perimeter of shapes by adding numbers together.
Demonstrate how to set out formula to calculate perimeter.
Eg 3+ 4+3+4=14.
Discuss what units can be used.

Activity

On the 1 cm grid paper (attached file) students draw shapes/pictures using the grid lines to calculate the perimeter. Remind children that they are using centimetres for their units.
